Algeria Opens AFCON Title Defense with a Draw Against Angola

Algeria started their 2024 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a draw against Angola, mirroring the slow beginnings of other tournament contenders like Egypt, Ghana, and Cameroon.

Baghdad Bounedjah gave Algeria the lead in the first half, showcasing his finishing prowess after being set up by a long ball from midfield.

Algeria’s dominance in possession and numerous created chances failed to result in an extended lead. However, Angola, showcasing resilience in defense, successfully leveled the score on the hour mark through Mabululu’s penalty.

Led by former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez, Algeria, the 2019 Afcon champions, entered the match as favorites. However, they faced a determined Angola side that thwarted their attempts to secure a victory.

Bounedjah thought he had scored a spectacular second goal with an overhead kick, but it was disallowed for offside. Algeria paid the price for missed opportunities when Nabil Bentaleb, a former Tottenham midfielder, committed a foul in the penalty area, allowing Mabululu to convert from the spot with his shot hitting the crossbar and crossing the line.

The draw leaves Algeria looking to regain momentum in their next match against Burkina Faso on January 20. Meanwhile, Angola will face Mauritania later the same day in Group D, which had its first round of matches.
