Bertrand Traore emerged as Burkina Faso’s hero by converting a 96th-minute penalty, securing a thrilling 1-0 win against Mauritania in a dramatic turn of events at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The tightly contested match in Bouake seemed destined for a goalless draw until Issa Kabore was brought down in the box by Mauritania’s Nouh El Abd.

Following a VAR review, Traore confidently dispatched the spot-kick, securing three crucial points for the Stallions in Group D.

Burkina Faso now leads the group, with their next challenge against Algeria on Saturday. Despite a spirited effort, Mauritania remains winless in seven AFCON appearances.
