Champions South Africa, Algeria Qualify for WAFCON 2024
The defending champions, South Africa, showcased their resilience in a closely contested match securing a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the return leg held at the nation’s capital at Pretoria’s Lucas Moripe Stadium on Monday.
Linda Mothlalo’s 55th-minute strike, followed by Nicole Michael’s goal in the 63rd minute, ultimately secured their qualification for Africa’s premier national women’s competition in Morocco next year. The teams had previously played to a 1-1 draw in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire, setting the stage for a compelling battle in the return match.
Meanwhile, in Burundi, Algeria sealed their return to the competition with a 1-0 victory over the East African nation. Holding a comfortable 5-1 lead from the home leg, the North Africans implemented a strategic game plan to deny Burundi possession.
In the 17th minute, Ines Boutaleb found the only goal of the match, solidifying Algeria’s two-legged victory and securing their place in Morocco for the 2024 tournament.
The Wafcon Morocco 2024 qualifiers will continue on Tuesday, determining the teams that will progress to the esteemed women’s national team competition.
