Ebenyo Nominated for the International Fair Play Award at the World Athletics Awards

Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo, the 10,000m world silver medalist, has received a nomination for the International Fair Play Award at the upcoming World Athletics Awards in December.

Simiu’s nomination stems from his remarkable act of sportsmanship at the World Road Running Championships in Riga.

During the men’s half marathon, despite his own efforts, Simiu saluted his compatriot Sabastian Sawe as Sawe surpassed him, ultimately winning the gold. Simiu’s gesture of sportsmanship in acknowledging his teammate’s victory by giving a salute has earned him this nomination.

Competing for the award are athletes such as Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey, Netherlands’s Sifan Hassan, Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson, along with other athletes recognized for their exceptional sportsmanship at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Letesenbet Gidey from Ethiopia showcased solidarity and support by comforting Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan after her fall during the women’s 10,000m, despite securing silver herself.

Sifan Hassan demonstrated grace in defeat after her fall during the 10,000m final, bouncing back to claim silver in the 5000m and bronze in the 1500m events.

Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson and USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson embraced spontaneously after their victories in the women’s 200m final.

Australia’s Nina Kennedy and USA’s Katie Moon opted to share gold in the pole vault at the World Athletics Championships after numerous attempts at 4.95m still couldn’t distinguish a clear winner.

Britain’s Jessica Warner-Judd exhibited a remarkable act of sportsmanship by waiting to congratulate and shake hands with the final-placed runner in the 10,000m final at the World Athletics Championships, despite finishing eighth herself.

The awards ceremony, scheduled for December, will recognize and celebrate these athletes for their outstanding display of fair play and sportsmanship in the world of athletics.
