The iconic Ngong Racecourse is gearing up for an exhilarating seven-card race this Sunday, coinciding with the King and Queen of Britain’s visit to Kenya and the celebrated Guy Fawkes Day, along with Australia’s renowned Melbourne Cup just around the corner.

The bustling heart of Nairobi pulses with the excitement of racing Sundays. Voted Lonely Planet’s best city to visit in 2024, the event promises a rich tapestry of fashion, with a stylish crowd bedecked in a blend of local and international haute couture, flocking to the races for a day filled with horse racing, music, and entertainment.

Renowned horse owners, Lord and Lady Spencer, are eagerly anticipating the weekend’s races, expressing their excitement for the sport’s evident growth, larger audiences, and the promise of a fantastic racing season ahead.

Trainer Ollie Gray, buoyed by the light rains, anticipates softer ground, creating unpredictable conditions that add to the thrill of the sport. He acknowledges the unpredictability of horses’ performances, a part of the sport’s allure and excitement.

Commencing at 12:20 pm, the day’s events kick off with the 1200m Hammurabi Maiden, featuring Joanna as the strong favourite.

Subsequent races include the Knighthood Handicap, the Royal Mail Handicap, the Joyous Gard Handicap, and the Spencer Tyron 7 Furlongs Trophy, showcasing the talents of top trainers, jockeys, and their horses. The afternoon’s main event, the Geoffrey Griffin Trophy at 3:15 pm, is anticipated to be a riveting clash over 1800m, with Saint Moritz as a significant contender.

However, the seasoned General Lee and the consistent Scott could prove formidable competition. The day concludes with The Merchant’s Purse Trophy at 3:50 pm, an 1800m dash where Coffee Break is slightly favoured, closely trailed by Bampton.

Adding to the spectacle, a vibrant pop-up market will offer a wide array of tantalizing treats and beverages, making the event a must-attend affair.

As the bustling Ngong Racecourse gears up for a thrilling race day, the convergence of world-class racing and a vibrant social scene promises an event not to be missed.
