In a significant development, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has disclosed that the Annual General Meeting (AGM), slated for March 16 in Nairobi, will play a pivotal role in shaping the roadmap for the much-anticipated national elections later this year.
The AGM will deliberate on crucial matters, including finalizing the election dates, selecting an appropriate venue, and appointing the electoral body responsible for overseeing the electoral process.
The decision to convene the AGM was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Saturday morning. This meeting was called in response to concerns raised by some members of the Federation’s highest echelon.
In a letter addressed to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and copied to FIFA, two NEC members expressed dissatisfaction with what they perceived as a lack of effective leadership at the Federation, citing an alleged absence of NEC meetings over the past three years.
Addressing these concerns, the top executives of the Federation gathered all regional heads at Kandanda House for the NEC meeting. A statement from the Federation, signed by Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno, emphasized a commitment to prudent governance and football growth in Kenya. The resolutions from this meeting are expected to pave the way for a more productive 2024 for all stakeholders involved in Kenyan football.
The NEC meeting further confirmed that this year’s elections will adhere to the FKF Electoral Code outlined in its constitution, the same code used in the previous polls that resulted in the re-election of Nick Mwendwa.
The impending elections have generated substantial interest, with various figures expressing their intention to vie for the top leadership position. Notable individuals who have thrown their hats into the ring include Gor Mahia Secretary General Sam Ocholla and former Kenyan international Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino.
There are also rumors that Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed is considering a run for the top seat, though he clarified on Friday that he has not yet officially declared his candidacy.
The football community in Kenya eagerly awaits the outcomes of the AGM and the subsequent elections, anticipating new leadership to steer the course of football development in the country.
