Former Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist and UK Athletics Coach Pickering Dies at 62

A former Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and Olympian Shaun Pickering has passed away at the age of 62.

Pickering won the bronze medal in the shot put at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and represented Wales at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, finishing 27th in the shot put. After retiring from his athletic career, Pickering served as UK Athletics’ national event coach for heavy throws.

Welsh Athletics expressed their condolences and said that everyone was saddened to hear about the passing of the “Hall of Fame” inductee, multiple Welsh Champion & Record Holder Shaun Pickering.

Pickering’s father, Ron Pickering, was a BBC commentator and coach for the Wales national team, while his mother, Jean, represented Great Britain at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and won gold in the long jump at the 1954 European Athletics Championships.
