Gor Mahia head coach Jonathan McKinstry emphasizes the importance of squad depth as the reigning champions approach the final stretch of the FKF Premier League, with nine matches left to play.

McKinstry remains cautious, emphasizing that the league is far from decided, with Gor Mahia holding an eight-point lead at the top of the standings following the weekend’s results.

“This league isn’t won by 11 players especially at this point of the season where the weather is beginning to change, the pitches are becoming heavier. You are going to get more fatigue, little injuries and you need everyone in your squad,” McKinstry remarked.

He continued, “We are in a position that is good but it’s not finished yet. We got to keep working, keep fighting and we are ready for that.”

Gor Mahia faced a 0-0 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz over the weekend, during which McKinstry implemented several changes and rotations in his squad. Youngster Paul Ochuoga started in defense, with regular Rooney Onyango playing further upfront. New signings Musa Masika and Shariff Musa were also given starting roles, along with Rodgers Ouma and Bryson Wangai, while Lawrence Juma and Kennedy Onyango were substituted at halftime.

McKinstry explained that these alterations were aimed at maintaining squad fitness and ensuring readiness for the remaining matches of the season.

Despite Gor Mahia dropping points, they received a boost with Tusker FC and Bandari FC, their closest rivals, both losing their respective matches. Tusker fell 3-2 to Kariobangi Sharks, while Bandari suffered a 1-0 defeat against Ulinzi Stars. This widened Gor Mahia’s lead at the top of the table.

In other results, Police FC moved within a point of second place after a 2-1 win over FC Talanta, while Nzoia Sugar’s struggles continued with a 4-0 loss to Murang’a Seal.

Shabana FC’s 3-0 victory against Posta Rangers boosted their chances of survival, while Muhoroni Youth secured a 1-0 win against Nairobi City Stars. Sofapaka drew 1-1 with AFC Leopards, edging two points away from the relegation zone.
