Grief and Shock As World Mourns Death Of Marathon Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum
The tragic news of the sudden passing of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum on Sunday has sent shockwaves across the globe and cast a pall of mourning over the nation.
Kiptum, along with his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana, tragically lost their lives Sunday night in a devastating road accident in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The severity of the accident was evident in the extensive damage sustained by their vehicle.
At the young age of 24, Kiptum’s promising athletics career was abruptly cut short. Just recently, he had made headlines by shattering the men’s marathon world record with a remarkable time of 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon in October. His extraordinary feat made him the first man to complete the 42km race in under two hours and one minute.
News of Kiptum’s untimely demise prompted an outpouring of condolences from the athletics fraternity, the sports community, and leaders both locally and internationally.
“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana. On behalf of all World Athletics, we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates, and the Kenyan nation,” expressed World Athletics president Sebastian Coe.
“I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana. My condolences to the families, friends, athletic fraternity, and Kenya at large. This is a huge loss,” lamented world 800m record holder David Rudisha.
“Rest in Peace Kelvin Kiptum. Gone too soon but you will never be forgotten. Legend,” echoed world cross country champion Beatrice Chebet on Facebook.
In addition to athletes, leaders from various political backgrounds also mourned the loss of the beloved athlete.
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach. His remarkable talent and unwavering dedication to athletics inspired countless individuals. He made an indelible mark not only through his achievements but also through mentorship and leadership, guiding aspiring athletes to reach their full potential. May you find comfort in the cherished memories you shared and strength in the support of one another,” penned Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga also paid tribute to Kiptum, saying, “Devastating news as we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, World Record holder and Kenyan athletics icon. Together with his coach, they tragically passed on in an accident tonight. My deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity.
