Ivory Coast emerged victorious in a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations final, defeating Nigeria 2-1 in a dramatic encounter that saw Sebastien Haller scoring a late winner.

The match, held at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium, showcased Ivory Coast’s resilience as they fought back from a goal down to claim their third continental title.

Nigeria, led by Victor Osimhen, initially took the lead late in the first half when captain William Troost-Ekong headed in a goal from a corner. However, Ivory Coast mounted a comeback, with Franck Kessie equalizing just after the hour mark. The decisive moment came in the 81st minute when Haller converted Simon Adingra’s cross, sending the Ivorian fans into a frenzy of celebration.

This victory marks Ivory Coast’s third AFCON title, adding to their triumphs in 1992 and 2015. It also sees them join Nigeria on three Cup of Nations triumphs overall. Despite Nigeria’s formidable performance throughout the tournament, Ivory Coast’s determination proved too much to overcome, making them the first host country to win the AFCON since 2006.

The road to victory was not easy for Ivory Coast, who faced adversity early in the tournament with a heavy defeat to Equatorial Guinea. However, under the guidance of coach Emerse Fae, they orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, defeating strong opponents like Senegal and DR Congo on their path to the final.

The final itself was a tense affair, with both teams creating few chances in the early stages. However, Ivory Coast showed resilience and determination, eventually securing victory with their relentless attacking play.
