Kenya Cup: KCB Secures Dorminant Win Against Leos, Kabras Thrashes Mwamba
In a thrilling weekend of Kenya Cup action, KCB RFC continued their dominant form with a resounding 36-11 victory over Strathmore Leos, securing their sixth consecutive win of the season.
Meanwhile, league leaders Kabras Sugar displayed sheer dominance by demolishing Mwamba 87-0 at the Kakamega Showground, and Menengai Oilers narrowly edged out K.U Blak Blad 23-19.
At the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka, Nairobi, the bankers, led by coach Mariko Mshila, asserted their authority from the start in what was dubbed the ‘Jerry Olola Derby,’ named in honor of the late rugby star who played for both KCB and Strathmore Leos. Peter Kilonzo set the tone with a try just two minutes into the match, and tries from Austin Sikutwa and captain Griffin Musila gave KCB a commanding 17-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, KCB continued their dominance, securing a penalty try and Kolian Persinan’s try, ultimately sealing a comprehensive victory. Brian Wahinya added the final try for KCB, highlighting their formidable performance in the Kenya Cup.
Back Coach Mariko Mshila expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am very happy with today’s win; the boys showed grit until the final whistle. Despite the change in weather in the second half that made ball handling difficult, we were able to emerge victorious under difficult circumstances.”
Captain Griffin Musila praised the team’s resilience, noting, “We are doing extremely well in the league now, and I am proud of the boys for a resilient show. Even though we missed the services of Vincent Onyala, Festus Shiasi, and Samuel Asati, the boys have proved that they can represent the badge. It also speaks to the plethora of talent within our squad.”
Looking ahead, KCB will face Nakuru RFC in their next Kenya Cup fixture on January 27, 2024.
