The International School Sport Federation (ISF) has lauded the Kenyan government’s diligent preparations for the upcoming World Schools Cross Country Championships, scheduled for May 10-15 at the Ngong Race Course.
Marking a historic first, the event will take place in Africa, with expectations of over 500 student athletes from more than 100 schools worldwide.
During a site visit, ISF Executive Committee Member Olabisi Joseph, alongside Kenya’s Basic Education PS Dr. Belio Kipsang and Athletics Kenya president Jackson Tuwei, praised Kenya’s opportunity to enhance its storied athletic legacy by hosting the championships.
“Hosting this event in Africa is a cause for celebration, and we anticipate Kenya will deliver an event of the highest caliber. School sports play a pivotal role in shaping the futures of students and discovering new athletic talents,” remarked Olabisi, who also presides over the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF).
The championship will not only showcase athletic prowess but also feature cultural exchanges to foster learning and understanding among the diverse participants.
Olabisi emphasized the unifying power of sports, “Despite our diverse backgrounds and cultures, sports bring us together, transcending all barriers. It’s essential for instilling positive values in our youth, and I advocate for the integration of sports within educational curricula.”
Echoing this sentiment, PS Kipsang highlighted the integration of sports within Kenya’s educational reforms, offering young talents the means to develop their abilities fully.
“We take the nurturing of emerging talents seriously, as evidenced by the inclusion of sports in our educational and co-curricular programs,” Kipsang stated, expressing gratitude to the Local Organizing Committee for their commitment to delivering a top-tier event.
Tuwei assured that Athletics Kenya is fully prepared to support the Ministry of Education in hosting a successful event and will offer guidance to the young athletes participating.
The championship will cater to three age groups: under 12, under 15, and under 18, continuing the tradition of fostering young talent, as seen in the previous 25th edition held in Slovakia.
