The team’s stellar performance unfolded during their second-round clash with Malawi at the Nairobi Sikh Union, where they emerged victorious by 67 runs.
The Kenyan openers, Rushab Patel and Neil Mugabe, unleashed a batting onslaught, racking up an astonishing 86 runs without loss in just the first six overs. This aggressive start not only showcased their strategic prowess but also secured the second-highest opening partnership of the tournament. Kenya’s decision to bat first paid off handsomely, as they set a formidable total of 219 for 7.
Malawi, in their response, managed a respectable 154, largely due to Sami Sohail’s valiant 81 from 55 deliveries.
Rushab Patel’s explosive 75 off 37 balls and Mugabe’s rapid 33 from 16 balls laid the foundation for Kenya’s high score. Captain Rakep Patel’s extraordinary 30 runs in a single over further bolstered their total.
Coach Joseph Angara praised the team’s strategy of capitalizing on the powerplay’s fielding restrictions, which significantly contributed to their tactical edge. He lauded the batsmen’s skill and synergy, which were evident in their commanding performance.
Rushab Patel led the charge with a fierce display of hitting, including three sixes and eight fours. Following the powerplay, Mugabe was dismissed, paving the way for Nelson Odhiambo, who partnered with Rushab to add another 30 runs to the tally.
The partnership between Kanbis Sports Club’s Rakep Patel and Sachin Bhudiya was particularly noteworthy, with Rakep’s five consecutive sixes in the 16th over being the highlight.
Despite their efforts, Kenya’s bowlers faced challenges in dismissing their opponents, taking only four wickets in total. Malawi’s Sohail and Aaftab Limdawala put up a strong partnership, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their team’s defeat.
