Michael Wamalwa, the captain of the national under-20 rugby team, expressed optimism about causing an upset in their next game against Spain at the ongoing World Under-20 Rugby Trophy in Nairobi.
Despite a disappointing start with a narrow 34-25 loss to two-time champions Samoa in their opening match at Nyayo National Stadium, Wamalwa believes the team has grown in confidence and learned from their mistakes.
Reflecting on the previous game, Wamalwa acknowledged that they gave their opponents too much respect in the first half but emphasized the team’s conviction and determination that grew after a motivational pep talk in the dressing room.
He noted that they recognized Samoa as a beatable team and decided to come back in the second half with their best efforts. Although time was not on their side and even a last-gasp try couldn’t turn the tide, Wamalwa remained positive about their performance.
The captain acknowledged the difference in exposure and experience between the two teams, with many of Kenya’s players featuring in the Championships and Eric Shirley Shield. He pointed out that some of Samoa’s players had even played in the HSBC Sevens Series, highlighting the need for more exposure and experience among the Kenyan players.
Wamalwa expressed hope that some of the Under-20 players would soon have the opportunity to compete at the international level, which would significantly benefit their development.
Looking ahead to the upcoming match against Spain, who secured a commanding 53-0 victory against Hong Kong in their opening encounter, Wamalwa recognized the challenge they face.
Spain currently leads Pool B with five points, alongside second-placed Samoa, while Kenya sits in third place with a single point. Despite the tough competition, Wamalwa and the team remain determined to rectify their mistakes and prepare diligently for their next match.
With the experience gained from their opening game and a strong determination to perform better, Wamalwa believes the team is ready to bring positive results in their clash against Spain on Thursday.
