Kenya’s Beach Volleyball Teams Exit Africa Games, Wafalme Stars Kick Off Strong Campaign

Kenya’s hopes for a podium finish in beach volleyball at the Africa Games were dashed on Wednesday as both the men’s and women’s teams bowed out in the quarterfinals in Accra, Ghana.

The men’s team, making their debut appearance at the biannual Games, were the first to exit after Elphas Makuto and Jairus Kipkosgei suffered a 2-0 defeat (21-12, 21-16) against South Africa’s Leo Williams and Danilo Von Ludwiger at the Boma Beach.

Shortly after, the women’s team of Gaudencia Makokha and Yvonne Wavinya, arriving in Accra as silver medalists, also fell 2-0 (21-12, 21-16) to Egypt’s Marwa Magdi and Doha Tawfik.

Despite starting well, both Kenyan teams couldn’t match their opponents’ prowess, highlighting Kenya’s inadequate preparations once again.

Team manager Moses Mbuthia acknowledged the unpredictability of beach volleyball, stating, “If there is a game where the past counts for nothing, then it is beach volleyball. All depends on how you wake up and prepare.”

Mbuthia praised the determination of both teams, noting their efforts in previous fixtures. He highlighted the tough competition faced, particularly against professional teams like South Africa.

Reflecting on the men’s team’s progress, Mbuthia emphasized their growth despite limited exposure to international tournaments. He mentioned upcoming tournaments aimed at improving their skills and exposure.

Meanwhile, the national men’s volleyball team, Wafalme Stars, began their championship campaign positively with a convincing 3-0 sets victory against Chad in Group E. Under the guidance of coach Gideon Tarus, Wafalme Stars dominated their Central African opponents in sets of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-16.
