Kenya’s Rising Stars kicked off their tri-nation tournament in Blantyre, Malawi, securing a 3-1 victory against Zimbabwe on Friday. Elly Owande was the standout player, netting two goals for the team.
Despite the absence of head coach Salim Babu due to travel document issues, the Kenyan Under-20 team delivered a strategic performance to claim the win. “Facing an unfamiliar team was challenging, but securing the win is what counts in football,” remarked interim coach Anthony Akhulia.
The team is now gearing up for the final match against the host nation, Malawi, on Sunday. A victory in this match would crown them as the tri-nation tournament champions. “Playing the hosts will be demanding, but we’re ready and aiming for a win,” added Akhulia.
Hassan Beja, winger for AFC Leopards, scored the third goal, following Owande’s impressive brace. Zimbabwe managed to score a consolation goal eight minutes before the final whistle.
Owande opened the scoring just nine minutes into the game with a stunning left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area. He then added to the lead in the 18th minute with a powerful strike to the net’s roof.
Zimbabwe sought to respond, but Kenya’s goalkeeper Issa Emuria was up to the task, making a crucial save to deny Denzel Mafua’s shot. Suleiman Manzur also contributed defensively, blocking a shot from Prince Magondo.
In the second half, Kenya maintained control and extended their lead to 3-0 in the 73rd minute when Beja expertly finished a cross from Timothy ‘Babu’ Ouma.
Despite a defensive error allowing Zimbabwe to score late in the game, the Kenyan team remained composed to see out the win. The Rising Stars are now looking forward to their next challenge as they aim to conclude the tournament on a high note.
