Kenya’s Top Athletes To Headline Paris Olympics Trials
Athletics Kenya (AK) is taking a firm stance on anti-doping compliance as it gears up for the Olympic trials, which will determine the athletes representing Kenya at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
The trials are scheduled for June 14-15 at the Nyayo National Stadium and will feature over 250 athletes, including notable figures such as Ferdinand Omanyala, Faith Kipyegon, and Mary Moraa.
Paul Mutwii, AK’s vice-president and director of competitions, emphasized the importance of adhering to the stringent anti-doping regulations, especially given Kenya’s Category ‘A’ status, which indicates a high risk of doping. This classification has led to increased scrutiny and the implementation of rigorous testing protocols.
To date, 49 athletes have been cleared to compete, having undergone the necessary doping tests 10 months prior to the event. These tests include a series of three no-notice out-of-competition tests, spaced at least three weeks apart, to ensure fair play and integrity in the sport.
Barnaba Korir, the chairman of Athletics Kenya’s Nairobi Region, highlighted the selection criteria for the Olympic team, stating that the top two athletes in each event at the trials will secure their spots on the team. However, all participants must first meet the strict anti-doping requirements.
The trials will witness fierce competition, with sprinters like Omanyala vying for a place in the 100m event and middle-distance runner Kipyegon aiming to qualify in both the 1500m and 5000m categories. The event promises to be a showcase of Kenya’s athletic talent and commitment to clean sport.
