Kerley dominates in Yokohama with an impressive 100m season opener

The reigning world champion Fred Kerley showcased his dominance in the 100m event during his season debut at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Yokohama, Japan.

In a remarkable speed display, Kerley recorded a swift time of 9.88 (1.5m/s) in the heats, setting a new meeting record. Undeterred by the race being recalled twice, Kerley remained composed and triumphed in the final with a time of 9.91 (0.4m/s).

Rohan Browning of Australia and Ryuichiro Sakai of Japan finished behind him with identical times of 10.10.

Having already claimed victories in the 200m events in Melbourne, Doha, and Sydney, Kerley maintained his unbeaten streak and now focuses on upcoming Diamond League competitions in Rabat and Florence.

These events will see him go head-to-head with Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs and world bronze medalist Trayvon Bromell in the 100m.

In the women’s 100m race, the anticipated battle between Zoe Hobbs of New Zealand and Destiny Smith-Barnett of the USA unfolded as predicted.

Both athletes exhibited impressive starts, but Hobbs showcased a superior finish, crossing the finish line comfortably in 11.20 (-0.4m/s). Smith-Barnett secured second place with a time of 11.41.
