The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s basketball team capped off a remarkable 2023 with a podium finish at the inaugural Africa Women’s Basketball League in Alexandria, Egypt.

The silver medal secured by KPA marks Kenya’s second club basketball medal, following Eagle Wings’ bronze in Menkes, Morocco, in 2013.

In the final of the 10-team tournament, KPA faced a formidable opponent in hosts Alexandria Sporting Club, ultimately falling short with a scoreline of 103-59. Despite the loss, the team showcased outstanding performances throughout the competition.

Madina Okot emerged as the event’s top rebounder, securing 77 boards, while Victoria Reynolds also earned recognition as one of KPA’s standout players.

The individual efforts of Okot and Reynolds were acknowledged as they were both included in the tournament’s Best Five players. The Most Valuable Player title went to Cierra Dillard of ASC, accompanied by her teammate Hager Amer and Destiney Promise of Rwanda Energy Group.

Equity Bank Hawks, another Kenyan representative, secured the sixth position, concluding their campaign with an 83-53 defeat against Customs of Nigeria. The bronze medal went to Interclube of Angola, who defeated Rwanda Energy Group 83-68.

In addition to their success in Alexandria, KPA also triumphed in the FIBA Africa Zone Five competition by defeating Rwanda Energy, securing tickets for the Africa Women’s Basketball League.

Coach Anthony Ojukwu expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, considering the loss to a formidable opponent as a testament to their overall achievement.
