Liverpool displayed a dominant second-half performance in their clash against Wolves on Saturday, rallying from an early setback to secure a 3-1 victory and claim the top spot in the Premier League standings following the early kick-off at Molineux.
The home side, led by Hwang Hee-chan, swiftly took the lead against their somewhat sluggish opponents, offering a flurry of opportunities to extend their advantage in an impressive first-half performance.
However, Liverpool stormed back after halftime, with Cody Gakpo equalizing just 10 minutes into the second period. Jurgen Klopp’s squad exerted significant pressure on Wolves, eventually reaping the rewards. Andy Robertson calmly slotted home in the 85th minute, followed by an own goal from Hugo Bueno that added a touch of lustre to the scoreline.
This fourth consecutive victory propels Liverpool to the summit of the Premier League table, ahead of the 2:00 PM GMT kick-offs.
Wolves have grappled with a lack of cutting edge this season, but they began the match brightly, with Pedro Neto and new signing Jean-Ricner Bellegarde posing a constant threat.
Their early efforts paid off as Neto surged down the left, navigated through Liverpool’s defence, and delivered a cross from the byline, finding Hwang, who clinically finished past goalkeeper Alisson Becker from a tight angle.
The high-energy home side appeared dangerous each time they ventured forward, while Liverpool, missing the suspended Virgil van Dijk and the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, struggled to exert any substantial control.
Nevertheless, the Wolves’ incisive attacking play didn’t translate into quality finishing, and they squandered numerous inviting opportunities to extend their lead.
Defender Craig Dawson headed over from a corner at the back post, while Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha missed a glorious chance in the 34th minute after more brilliant work from Neto, mistiming his jump horribly.
Towards the end of the first half, Liverpool created a number of chances, suggesting the threat within their ranks.
Klopp made a halftime substitution, introducing Luis Diaz for Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, and the Colombian came close to equalizing with a header in the early moments.
As Klopp prepared to bring on Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez for Gakpo and Diogo Jota, Gakpo found the net with his final touch.
Mohamed Salah, who had been relatively quiet until then, received the ball on the right and delivered a sharp cross into the area, allowing Gakpo to poke it home.
Liverpool had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Diaz found Nunez in front of goal, but his shot was saved by Jose Sa.
Klopp’s side continued to press Wolves and took the lead in the 85th minute when Robertson collected a poor clearance from Sa in midfield. The Scottish defender surged forward, executed a one-two with Salah, and finished from close range.
Liverpool still had time to add a third goal when Elliott’s shot took a significant deflection off Bueno, deceiving Sa in the process.
