Manchester City celebrated their remarkable achievement of clinching their third consecutive Premier League title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Having secured the title the previous day when Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, Pep Guardiola took the opportunity to rest key players in preparation for the upcoming FA Cup and Champions League finals, aiming for a historic treble.
Even with a heavily rotated squad, Manchester City showcased their depth and talent. Julian Alvarez, often playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland, demonstrated his prowess by scoring his 17th goal of the season, extending City’s unbeaten streak to an impressive 24 matches across all competitions.
However, the jubilant atmosphere was overshadowed at full-time as thousands of fans disregarded the club’s requests to remain in the stands, flooding onto the pitch.
Guardiola made nine changes to the lineup that thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 earlier in the week. The youthful City side displayed their sharpness from the start and took the lead in the 12th minute. Alvarez, in superb form throughout the season, capitalized on Cole Palmer’s assist to find the back of the net.
Palmer, making a rare Premier League start, came close to doubling City’s advantage but was denied by Trevoh Chalobah’s goal-line clearance.
Chelsea’s defeat confirmed their disappointing season, languishing in the bottom half of the table. Their struggles in front of goal, a recurring theme under different managers, were evident once again.
Raheem Sterling, in his return to the Etihad, missed an opportunity to score as Stefan Ortega produced an excellent save to deny him. Moments later, Conor Gallagher’s header struck the post with only Ortega to beat.
The lack of intensity from both teams was apparent as the game proceeded at a slow pace under the scorching Manchester sun. Nonetheless, the home fans reveled in their team’s success, chanting “championees” and engaging in the iconic Poznan celebration.
Chelsea had a chance to salvage a point in the second half, but even when Sterling beat the stand-in goalkeeper, John Stones heroically cleared the ball off the line. Mykhailo Mudryk and Cesar Azpilicueta squandered late opportunities to equalize.
In the dying minutes, Kalvin Phillips came agonizingly close to scoring his first goal for Manchester City, with his header striking the inside of the post.
Alvarez thought he had a second goal, but Riyad Mahrez’s handball resulted in its disallowance. Guardiola delighted the home crowd by introducing Haaland from the bench. The Norwegian striker, with his first touch, attempted a shot on goal and almost set up Rico Lewis with a cross.
Ultimately, Haaland’s 53rd goal of the season would have to wait as City calmly saw out the final stages, solidifying their seven-point lead at the top of the table with two games remaining, while Arsenal has one match left in their campaign.
