Fluminense’s hopes of an upset were further dashed with Nino’s first-half own goal, sealing City’s dominance. Phil Foden and Alvarez completed the scoring in the final 20 minutes, securing City’s triumph. This victory extended the streak of European clubs’ dominance in the competition since 2012. City’s achievement includes a treble of the club’s first-ever Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup last season, along with the UEFA Super Cup lifted in August.
Pep Guardiola, making history as the first coach to lift the Club World Cup four times and with three different clubs, expressed his pride in the team’s unique mentality. Guardiola stated, “To win the treble was truly special, but to win two more trophies and now hold these five major titles shows the unique mentality of this team.”
Despite concerns about City’s poor Premier League form before the tournament, the match highlighted the growing gap between Europe’s elite clubs and the rest of the world due to financial imbalances in the global game.
City secured the fastest goal ever in a Club World Cup final, with Alvarez chesting the ball into an unguarded net within 45 seconds. The Argentine’s remarkable year, including international successes and multiple club trophies, was further embellished with this achievement.
Fluminense’s captain, Nino, inadvertently turned Foden’s cross into his own net, adding to City’s lead. While Fluminense’s goalkeeper Fabio made notable saves, City’s Ederson also played a crucial role in maintaining their two-goal advantage.
Man City faced a potential setback as influential midfielder Rodri was forced off with an injury 20 minutes from time. City’s upcoming challenges in the Premier League may be impacted, given their previous struggles without the Spanish midfielder.
Nevertheless, this victory crowned a glorious year for Manchester City, marking the pinnacle of a trophy-laden 15 years since the transformative takeover by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
