World number two, Rory McIlroy, has expressed support for plans to “roll back” golf ball technology to limit the distances the balls can travel.

McIlroy took to social media to share his backing for the proposals, highlighting that it will have no impact on the average golfer and will contribute to the sustainability of the sport.

Golf’s governing bodies, the R&A and United States Golf Association, are reportedly close to announcing a comprehensive roll back of golf ball technology. This move comes after earlier proposals faced opposition, with critics arguing for different rules for amateur and professional games, known as “bifurcation.”

In March, the governing bodies proposed a Model Local Rule (MLR) allowing tournaments to require the use of balls with reduced travel distances, applicable to elite competitions like The Open and US Open.

However, the PGA Tour and equipment manufacturers opposed the idea, leading to a shift in support from McIlroy and others for a more universal rule change.

McIlroy expressed his perspective on the matter, stating, “I don’t understand the anger about the golf ball rollback.” He suggested that the resistance comes from elite professionals and manufacturers who are concerned about potential negative impacts on their financial interests.

Despite the initial push for bifurcation, the decision now leans towards a more widespread adjustment in golf ball technology for the benefit of the entire sport.
