Following Gor Mahia’s qualification for the prestigious CAF Champions League, striker Benson Omalla is excited about the prospects in continental football.
Gor Mahia secured their spot in the championship after clinching their 20th league title with a commanding 4-1 victory over Nairobi City Stars at Kasarani Stadium.
Omalla, who netted an impressive 26 goals during the league campaign, believes that the Champions League will provide him with an opportunity to shine in Africa and attract the attention of European clubs.
In an interview with Citizen Digital during a luncheon hosted by Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and the Digital Economy Eliud Owalo, Omalla expressed his gratitude to the technical bench for trusting him in the striker role.
He described his season as highly successful and emphasized that playing in the Champions League is a dream for any player. Omalla aims to work even harder, recognizing that the competition could open doors to bigger clubs and greater opportunities.
Omalla finished as the second-highest scorer in the league, just behind Elvis Rupia of Kenya Police FC, who netted 27 goals.
Reflecting on the overall level of competition in the league, Omalla was impressed and highlighted the abundance of talented strikers in Kenya. He believes this bodes well for the national team, as the coach will have a wide pool of options soon.
In another positive development for the club, Gor Mahia received a significant boost as Cabinet Secretary Owalo awarded them KSh3 million in appreciation of their FKF Premier League triumph. Owalo challenged the club’s leadership to establish solid structures to facilitate the team’s much-needed growth.
The awarded sum was distributed among various departments, with KSh1 million allocated to the playing unit and an equal amount to the management.
The technical bench, team drivers, and security team received KSh500,000, KSh200,000, and KSh300,000, respectively.
As Gor Mahia looks ahead to their continental campaign, Omalla’s aspirations are high, and the club’s recent success, along with the support they receive, provides a strong foundation for their future endeavours.
