Rangers, KDF Stun Opponents in Kenya Handball Federation Super Cup

Rangers and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) emerged victorious against their formidable opponents during the Kenya Handball Federation women’s Super Cup held at the Nyayo National Stadium a thrilling display of skill and determination.

The tournament newcomers, Rangers, defied all expectations as they triumphed over the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) with a score of 27-24.

Meanwhile, KDF put an end to Nairobi Water’s 12-year unbeaten streak, clinching a remarkable 33-26 win against the record champions.

Despite the defeat, Nairobi Water coach Jack Ochieng graciously acknowledged KDF’s superior performance. He remained optimistic about their chances in the upcoming match against Cereals, expressing hope that his injured players would recover in time for selection.

Ochieng emphasized the importance of experience and maintained confidence in his team’s abilities.

KDF coach Nickson Oyaro expressed his satisfaction with the hard-fought victory, highlighting the team’s perseverance and dedication.

Following their loss to Cereals the previous day, KDF regrouped and executed a winning strategy. Oyaro eagerly anticipates the next weekend’s matches, aiming to secure the coveted championship title.

Leading the scoring for KDF were Sarah Wasike with seven goals and Euphrasia Mukasia with six goals. Nairobi Water’s top scorers included Cecilia Katheu with seven goals, captain Gladys Chillo, Brenda Musambai, and Mitchell Oyoo, each contributing four goals.

In the men’s category, Strathmore University secured a convincing 33-17 victory over Kenyatta University (KU), securing their spot in the semifinals scheduled for the following weekend. Strathmore University will now face KDF in pool “B” to determine the pool’s winner.

Strathmore coach Peter Mwathi praised his team’s remarkable performance, emphasizing the importance of the win as they strive to qualify for the final.

Mwathi, who also serves as the men’s national team coach, commended his players’ character and expressed optimism about their future matches.

Notably, Black Mamba made a remarkable recovery, forcing a 17-17 draw against General Service Unit in the pool “A.”

The Super Cup brings together the top six men’s and women’s teams after the regular season. The women’s competition follows a round-robin format, while the men’s event operates as a knockout tournament.
