After a decade-long hiatus, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced the eagerly anticipated return of the Rugby Super Series (RSS).

Breaking new ground, the 2024 Rugby Super Series will embrace inclusivity by featuring two Women’s teams for the first time since its inception in 2003, marking a significant step forward in the development of the sport.

Set to unfold over four Saturdays in May 2024, matches will traverse Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kakamega, showcasing the talents of four men’s teams and two women’s teams. The men’s contingent, representing Kenya Cup Clubs, includes Buffaloes, Cheetahs, Lions, and Rhinos, while the Women’s teams will form part of the National Lionesses’ squad, competing as Eagles & Jaguars.

The men’s competition will adopt a round-robin format, with each team facing off against the others across the initial three match days at various venues. The top two teams will then advance to the final showdown.

On the women’s front, matches will exclusively take place in Nairobi, with victory determined by aggregate scores over two games.

Aggrey Chabeda, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Rugby Super Series, expressed his elation, heralding the occasion as a momentous milestone. “I am delighted to be part of this historic event and to articulate our vision for the tournament’s future,” Chabeda remarked.

Highlighting the tournament’s illustrious legacy, Chabeda underscored its pivotal role in shaping Kenya XV’s rugby landscape. “This tournament holds a revered legacy and has been instrumental in shaping the trajectory of Kenya XV’s rugby. We are thrilled to revive it and provide a platform for our premier players to shine on the national stage once more,” he emphasized.

Chabeda also delineated the core objectives of the tournament, which encompass elevating playing standards, ensuring professional and commercial management, and cultivating a family-friendly entertainment atmosphere.

“Our primary objectives are to enhance playing standards for our elite athletes, manage the tournament with professionalism and commercial acumen, and offer a family-friendly entertainment experience,” Chabeda affirmed. “The relaunch of the Rugby Super Series heralds a new era for Kenyan rugby, characterized by professionalism, excitement, and growth. We extend an open invitation to all rugby enthusiasts, including the media, to embark on this journey with us,” he concluded.
