In a match marked by edgy play and numerous errors, Sabalenka capitalized decisively late in the second set, securing her victory. She is set to face Chinese 12th seed Zheng Qinwen in the final on Saturday.
Zheng Qinwen, 21, reached her first Grand Slam final by defeating Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-4 in the second semifinal. Zheng is vying to become the second Chinese woman to win the Australian Open singles title, coincidentally on the 10th anniversary of Li Na’s historic triumph.
Sabalenka’s aggressive game style and power were evident as she unleashed 33 winners, maintaining her composure to secure the win. The 25-year-old, seeking her 11th Grand Slam title and a record 25th crown, remains unbeaten at Melbourne Park since 2018.
Reflecting on her performance, Sabalenka expressed determination, stating, “I was able to focus on myself and be prepared for her moving really good and putting every ball back. I had to be ready to make an extra shot, and I was ready for tonight.”
In the other semifinal, Zheng Qinwen showcased her aggressive baseline play and powerful serve to defeat Yastremska, who fought valiantly despite needing treatment for an apparent abdominal injury.
The stage is set for a compelling final between Sabalenka and Zheng, with Sabalenka aiming to extend her Melbourne Park dominance, while Zheng seeks to make history with a Grand Slam title.
