Second Edition of Kenya Kungfu Championship Sees 70 Competitors in Action

The Chinese embassy in Kenya sponsored the second edition of the Kenya Kungfu Championship, which was held on Saturday in Kiambu.

According to Ngaruiya Njonge, Chairman of the Kenya Kungfu Federation, 13 clubs and 70 competitors participated in the tournament.

Njonge said that the tournament was a celebration of the rich and vibrant culture of Kungfu Wushu, which has captivated people around the world. Kung fu began to develop in Kenya in 2000, and there are currently around 3,000 Kenyans actively participating in the sport.

The first edition of the Kenya Kungfu Championship, held in 2021, helped to generate more interest in the sport locally.

Tang Jianjun, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese embassy in Kenya, said that Wushu, a form of expression of traditional Chinese thought, has become an international sport, covering 158 countries and regions across five continents.

The International Olympic Committee has approved that Wushu will be included as an official sport in the fourth Youth Olympic Games to be held in Dakar in 2026.

Tang expressed hope that Kenyan Wushu players would achieve good results and stand on the Youth Olympic stage at that time.
