Shujaa Secures Ksh.5.7 Million Reward Following Promotion in World Sevens Series
Kenya’s national rugby 7s team, Shujaa, has been assured of full support from the Ministry of Sports to retain their newly regained status in the HSBC World Rugby Series.
The team’s recent success in the series has prompted the ministry to grant them a reward of Ksh 5.7 million. This financial boost comes as a recognition of their achievement in bouncing back to the top tier of rugby after a brief stint in the Challenger Series. Each member of the team and the technical staff will receive KSh 300,000.
The Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, announced a comprehensive plan to enhance the country’s rugby infrastructure. This includes the construction and refurbishment of rugby stadiums to foster the sport’s long-term growth. The announcement was made during a celebratory dinner held in honor of Shujaa’s victory over Germany with a score of 33-15 in Madrid, which secured their spot in the topflight.
In line with the ongoing efforts to upgrade football facilities for the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2027, Namwamba emphasized the necessity for rugby facilities to meet international standards. This initiative aims to nurture new talent and elevate the sport within Kenya. The RFUEA grounds on Ngong Road and a new rugby center at Kasarani are the focal points of this development plan.
Looking ahead to the Paris Olympic Games, Namwamba expressed confidence in Shujaa’s ability to continue their excellent performance. He highlighted the importance of thorough preparation, which includes training programs both in Kenya and abroad. The team’s preparation for the Madrid tournament included a training camp in Miramas, France, and similar arrangements are in place for the upcoming Olympics.
Shujaa’s journey to reclaiming their core status in the World Rugby Series began with a stunning victory over South Africa at the Africa Sevens in Zimbabwe, which also secured them a place in the Olympics. Their triumph at the Safari Sevens tournament in Nairobi further boosted their confidence, leading up to their successful campaign in the 2024 Challenger Series. The team’s goal was to finish in the top four, which they achieved, thereby qualifying for the promotion-relegation playoff.
