Defending champions South Africa displayed unwavering resilience as they twice came from behind to secure a dramatic victory over the passionate hosts, France, in a thrilling Rugby World Cup quarterfinal showdown.

The result sets up a tantalizing semi-final clash with England, to be held back at the iconic Stade de France next Saturday.

France kicked off the match with blistering intensity, securing an early try through prop Cyril Baille. However, their vulnerability under high kicks cost them dearly. First, South Africa’s Kurt-Lee Arendse sprinted to the corner to touch down, followed by Damian de Allende’s powerful charge over the try line, giving the Springboks a 12-7 lead.

France, spurred on by the fervent home crowd, roared back into the contest. Hooker Peato Mauvaka scored a crucial try, levelling the score. Cheslin Kolbe displayed incredible athleticism, charging down Thomas Ramos’ conversion attempt before racing to score a try of his own.

Nonetheless, Baille seized the moment, grabbing his second try, and Ramos landed a penalty to give Les Bleus a 22-19 lead at halftime.

Ramos extended France’s advantage with a penalty, but the indomitable spirit of the Springboks shone through. Eben Etzebeth stretched over for a critical try with just 14 minutes left. Replacement Handre Pollard confidently converted Etzebeth’s try and added a penalty that would prove to be the difference, despite a late response from Ramos.

Speaking after the intense clash, Springboks captain Siya Kolisi highlighted his team’s determination and the immense support from back home. “We knew how tough it was going to be, and the guys that came off the bench made a huge difference,” Kolisi said. He acknowledged the incredible support from fans back in South Africa and emphasized that their mission extends beyond just themselves; it’s about representing their nation.

Head coach Jacques Nienaber praised the French team for their tenacity and acknowledged the tightly contested battle. He looks forward to the challenge of facing England in the semi-final at Stade de France, emphasizing that knockout matches often come down to small margins and that their victory was hard-fought.

While France’s team manager, Raphael Ibanez, expressed sadness over the loss, he commended the French team’s efforts and their attempts to seize every scoring opportunity. He noted the sorrow felt for their passionate fans but highlighted the importance of resilience and determination as they move forward.

The thrilling contest between South Africa and France showcased the essence of rugby, filled with intense battles, passionate fans, and memorable moments. With two more games to go, the journey in the Rugby World Cup continues, with South Africa setting their sights on defending the title they won in Japan four years ago.
