Luis Rubiales resigned from his position as president of the Spanish soccer federation on Sunday, ending weeks of fierce criticism over his unwanted kiss with Women’s World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso.

Rubiales announced his resignation in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that he had notified the interim president, Mr. Pedro Rocha, of his decision.

He also stepped down from his position in UEFA to allow his vice-presidency position to be filled. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed his resignation from both the Spanish Football Association and his role as vice president of UEFA. The federation’s board of directors will now call an election to find a successor.

Rubiales had been facing widespread criticism after an unwanted kiss on Hermoso after the Spanish team’s victory in the Women’s World Cup final.

The incident sparked condemnation and led to his provisional suspension by FIFA for 90 days while a disciplinary investigation took place. Pedro Rocha stepped into the role in the interim.

Rubiales had staunchly defended the kiss as “mutual,” but Hermoso denied this, stating she did not consent and was not respected. The incident led to a wider conversation in Spain about the issue of “macho culture.”

Public outcry against the unwanted kiss came from various quarters of Spanish society, including politicians and sports stars. Spanish soccer players also showed support for Hermoso by stating that they would not return to the national team “if the current leaders continue” in their posts.

Rubiales’ position became increasingly untenable as more players resigned and he faced a wave of criticism from the sporting world and Spanish politicians.

On Monday, all 19 regional presidents of Spain’s soccer federation called for Rubiales to resign, and Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation into Rubiales, potentially leading to sexual aggression charges.

The complaint from the prosecutor’s office paves the way for Spain’s national court to launch a formal investigation into Rubiales and begin gathering evidence, which could lead to possible charges.

In response to Rubiales’ resignation, Hermoso’s fans and supporters celebrated her during her first match since the Women’s World Cup victory. The incident highlighted broader issues surrounding sexism and macho culture in Spain.
