Victor Omune, the dynamic forward for AFC Leopards, is brimming with confidence ahead of the much-awaited Mashemeji derby against Gor Mahia. The showdown, set for Sunday at Nyayo Stadium, is a key highlight of the 27th round in the 2023/24 FKF-PL season. Omune is eager to even the score after a defeat in their previous encounter.
In the first leg at Kasarani Stadium, Gor Mahia emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over AFC Leopards, who were then coached by Tom Juma. Omune, however, believes that the tides have turned since that loss and is energized for the upcoming match.
“The team is in high spirits, fully prepared for the derby. There’s always pressure in such matches, but it’s a positive force that drives us all to perform. I’ve grown accustomed to the derby atmosphere over time,” Omune stated confidently.
He prefers to let the game speak for itself rather than focus on the opposition. “We’ll see who earns the rights to boast after the match. I’m certain we’ll come out on top,” he declared.
Understanding the crucial role of fan support in a derby, Omune calls on the Leopards’ fans to fill the stands and provide that vital boost, assuring them of an entertaining match.
“I’m eager to score and if I do, it’ll be my fourth against Gor. I believe it’s destined to happen,” he added with anticipation.
As the derby approaches, Gor Mahia leads the league with 54 points, while AFC Leopards are in the 8th spot with 38 points. The Leopards have been in fine form, securing three wins, two draws, and only one loss in their last six matches.
The rivalry between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia dates back to their first clash on May 5, 1968, and has only intensified over the years. Gor Mahia boasts 20 Kenyan Premier League titles to AFC Leopards’ 12.
