Leah Jeruto will compete in the Paris Diamond League on July 7 after finishing third in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at the African Senior Championships in Douala, Cameroon. Jeruto clocked 9:36.33, trailing Ethiopia’s Alemnat Wale (9:35.19) and Uganda’s Loice Chepkwemoi (9:24.47).
“My next assignment will be in France on July 7,” Jeruto said following her performance in Douala. Reflecting on the race, she mentioned the challenge posed by the rain but expressed her determination to finish on the podium. “The weather was tough with rain, but I did my best,” she explained.
Jeruto acknowledged the stiff competition, particularly from Chepkwemoi, whose pace she found difficult to match from the start.
In her career, Jeruto has achieved notable results including a second-place finish at the Kip Keino Classic with a time of 9:39.94, and a bronze medal at the KDF Championships last year where she clocked 9:56.99.
Elsewhere in the championships, Brian Komen secured gold in the men’s 1,500m with a time of 3:33.95, followed by Ayanleh Abdillahi (3:36.24) of Djibouti and Boaz Kiprugut (3:37.25). Caroline Nyaga finished second in the women’s 1,500m in 4:06.76, trailing Ethiopia’s Sharon Berhe (4:06.05) and Uganda’s Esther Chebet (4:06.90).
The Kenyan team earned medals across various events, including silver in the men’s 4x400m relay and bronze in several other categories, bringing Kenya’s total medal count in Douala to 19 (five gold, seven silver, and seven bronze).
