2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers: Egypt gun down Kenya Morans 72-39

The National men’s basketball team, Kenya Morans suffered defeat at the ongoing FIBA Africa 2023 World Cup qualifiers after going down 39-72 to Egypt in their Group D match staged  at Alexandria, Egypt.

The Egyptians dominated the game from kick off with a dominant performance in the opening quarters to lead at the break.

The Morans became the latest entry into the growing list of 16 teams struggling to honor crucial international assignment. This is after a sigh of relief from FIBA to bail the struggling national team out for the World Cup 2023 African Qualifiers Window Three on Thursday night.

The National men’s basketball team missed to play against DR Congo on Friday before facing the hosts yesterday and Senegal today in return leg matches for the third window of the FIBA Africa Group D qualifiers.

In their Window Two games in Dakar, Senegal in February 2022, Kenya lost their three matches going down 56-66 to DR Congo, 105-51 to Egypt and 100-55.

A total of 16 teams divided into four groups are battling for 12 slots in the next phase of the qualifiers. Three best teams from groups A, B, C and D will punch their tickets for the second round. The first two sides from the two groups of the second round together with the best third-placed team will qualify for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Japan and Philippines.

According to the group staging, Cape Verde, Mali, Nigeria and Uganda are in Group A and Cameroon, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tunisia are in Group B. Their matches are being played at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

Group C consisting of Angola, Central African Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, and Guinea are being hosted by Abidjan. Kenya, Senegal and Egypt are in Group D which is centered is at Borg Al-Arab Indoor Hall Alexandria in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup will be hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
