The highly anticipated second leg of the 2025 LOOP Safari Gravel Series is set to take place this Saturday, March 8, in Machakos, bringing together over 250 cyclists for an exhilarating test of endurance and skill on the region’s rugged yet scenic gravel terrain.

Organized by the Amani Project in partnership with LOOP, the series is designed to enhance Kenya’s reputation as a premier global cycling destination while nurturing emerging talent in the sport.

Eric Muriuki, CEO of LOOP DFS, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming race, highlighting the unique appeal of the Machakos course.

“Machakos offers a perfect blend of challenge and beauty, making it an exciting addition to the LOOP Safari Gravel Series. We’re proud to support an initiative that not only promotes competitive cycling but also builds a vibrant community of passionate riders,” he said.

Race Categories & Course Highlights

The event will feature four distinct race categories tailored to different experience levels:

120 km LOOP – A true test of endurance for elite cyclists.

60 km LOOP – Ideal for experienced riders and enthusiasts.

20 km LOOP – A great challenge for amateur cyclists.

5 km LOOP – A junior category for riders under 18 years.

Cyclists will navigate a mix of smooth dirt roads, winding single tracks, and demanding climbs, offering a dynamic blend of speed and endurance challenges against the breathtaking hilly landscapes of Machakos County.

With top-tier teams competing in the 120 km race, there’s more than just pride on the line—cash prizes of KES 125,000, KES 100,000, and KES 70,000 await the top three finishers.

Hanifa Said, Director of Operations at Amani Project, emphasized the significance of expanding the series to Machakos.

“Bringing this event to Machakos is a major step in our mission to grow cycling across Kenya. Preparations are in full swing, and we are excited to offer cyclists a challenging yet rewarding experience,” she noted.

The 2025 LOOP Safari Gravel Series kicked off last month in Tatu City, drawing over 500 cyclists from across East Africa. The opening leg delivered thrilling performances, with two-time champion Jordan Schleck defending his title in the 120 km elite men’s race with an impressive 3:42:06, while Xaverine Nirere dominated the women’s category, clocking 4:06:05.

Following the Machakos showdown, the series will move to:

Naivasha – June 15 (UCI-accredited event)

📍 Vipingo – August 23

As anticipation builds for this weekend’s race, Machakos is set to deliver an electrifying cycling spectacle, combining competition, endurance, and stunning landscapes in one of Kenya’s most exciting sporting events.
