Nairobi Water Queens delivered a commanding performance as they defeated Kenyatta University 45-14 in a Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) league match at Nyayo Stadium.
The reigning champions, who remain unbeaten, demonstrated their prowess with a dominant display from the outset.
Brenda Musambai initiated the scoring with a breakaway goal, setting the tone for their relentless performance. By halftime, they had surged to a commanding 22-7 lead.
Coach Jack Ochieng expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and highlighted the opportunity he’s giving to new players to gain experience. He praised the defensive efforts of the team and acknowledged that while they are at 60 per cent of their potential, they are committed to continual improvement.
Cecilia Katheu led the way for Nairobi Water Queens with an impressive tally of 11 goals, while Brenda Musambai contributed eight, and captain Gladys Chilo added six. On the Kenyatta University side, Damaris Anjala notched nine goals, with Vivian Owano scoring four.
In the men’s match, Kenyatta University mounted a late comeback to secure a thrilling 30-30 draw against Engineers in a closely contested game. The students held a narrow 17-16 lead at halftime, but Engineers surged ahead.
However, KU managed to force a last-second penalty and Willis Musembi coolly converted it to salvage a point. Musembi expressed the team’s determination not to lose after a previous defeat, and they were pleased with the result.
Elsewhere, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUATS) outperformed Rising Star with a 35-26 victory.
Esther Gathoni led the scoring with 10 goals, supported by Terry Akinyi with eight and Sylvia Maina with seven. Sheila Atsachi and Dorcas Wenya were the leading scorers for Rising Star, both contributing eight goals.
The KHF league continues to provide thrilling handball action, showcasing the talent and determination of the teams as they compete for victory.
