The manager of the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Chess Team, Isaac Babu, is radiating optimism about the team’s prospects at the upcoming Mombasa Open Championships, set to take place at the Mombasa Beach Hotel this weekend.
Babu expressed his unwavering belief that the team is fully prepared and issued a stern warning to their regional rivals, cautioning them to brace themselves for a formidable challenge when they arrive at the seaside city for the competition.
“We have left no stone unturned in our preparations for these championships. All our players are primed and ready for the battle against competitors hailing from Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda. This promises to be a highly competitive tournament and will undoubtedly elevate the skills of our local players,” declared Babu.
He highlighted the recent participation of his players in the Rapid World Chess Championships held in Dusseldorf, Germany, last August. This international event not only honed their skills but also provided valuable experience to bolster their future performances. “Just this past August, our team showcased their talent in Germany during the Rapid World Chess Championships, where they put on an impressive performance. With this upcoming regional tournament, I have full confidence in our players. They are focused on claiming the prestigious trophy and the accompanying cash prize,” Babu stated.
The KCB Chess Team will be led by Master Benjamin Magana and boasts a lineup of formidable talents, including FIDE Masters Martin Njoroge and Joyce Nyaruai, Bernard Nguku, and the young sensation Robert McLigeyo, among others.
Their outstanding form throughout the season has seen them dominate the rankings, placing them at the summit of the cross table. Their main competitors include Equity Chess Club, Nairobi Chess Club, and Nairobi Chess Academy and Club, and this success has put them on course to secure yet another Kenya National Chess Premier League title.
The Mombasa Open Championships has garnered considerable interest, with 59 participants set to compete. The overall champion of the tournament will walk away with a substantial prize of Ksh 50,000.
