Uganda secured their inaugural Victoria Cup victory against Kenya with a thrilling 21-20 triumph in an electrifying match at the King’s Park Arena in Kampala,
Initially, the Simbas exhibited dominance, securing a swift 12-0 lead with two quick tries, the second of which was converted by Jone Kubu from Kabras Sugar.
However, fueled by a fervent home crowd, Uganda rallied back, managing to bridge the gap with two penalty goals by Ivan Magomu early on.
Uganda then took the lead with a converted try, concluding the first half 13-12 in their favour. The Simbas emerged strong after the break, netting a crucial penalty goal from Kubu in the 57th minute to level the score. Nonetheless, Uganda counterattacked with an impressive play that allowed Joseph Oyet to score a try and reclaim the lead.
Despite their persistent effort, Kenya kept the battle for the Elgon Cup alive. Exceptional teamwork between Brian Waihinya from Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Joel Inzuga led to Inzuga’s second try of the day, positioning the Simbas for a potential win.
However, the match took an unforeseen turn when Kenya conceded a last-minute penalty. Liam Walker, stepping in as a substitute and making only his second national team appearance, precisely struck the ball through the posts, securing Uganda’s first Victoria Cup trophy after 37 duels against Kenya.
The teams are set to face off again next Saturday in Kisumu for the second leg of the Elgon Cup.
