Vincent Aboubakar, the captain of the Cameroon national football team, will be sidelined for the opening group game of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Guinea due to an injury, as confirmed by the team’s coaching staff.
The Besiktas striker withdrew from a training session on Friday, citing a left thigh issue. However, subsequent tests indicated that the injury is minor, according to the team doctor’s statement.
Initially, there were concerns that the 31-year-old Aboubakar might miss the entire tournament. Cameroon is scheduled to face Guinea on Monday, followed by a crucial match against defending champions Senegal on January 19. The team will then play against Gambia in their final Group C match four days later.
Aboubakar, renowned for scoring the decisive goal in the 2017 final against Egypt, has not seen action since December 9, following his exclusion from the first-team squad at Besiktas.
