Beatrice Chebet, the World Cross Country Champion, and Daniel Simiu, the world half marathon silver medallist, emerged victorious at the 2024 National Police Service Cross Country championships held on Friday at the Ngong Race Course.
In the men’s race, Simiu of Rift Valley region secured first place in 29 minutes and 48.49 seconds, beating Edwin Kiplagat of RDU, who finished second in 30:17.91, and Robert Kiprop of DCI, who took the third spot in 30:43.06.
Simiu, a Police Constable, expressed dissatisfaction with the Service for not promoting him, despite his impressive performance last season despite his win. To highlight his discontent, the world 10,000m silver medalist removed his shirt as a form of protest nearing the finish line.
“…why are we not being recognized. I am sending this message to my employer (NPS) please recognise us. Whenever a child does well, you have to award them with a present. Thus I am just begging from the bottom of my heart,” lamented Simiu.
The 28-year-old track and road race specialist had a remarkable season last year, clinching silver at both the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia. He also celebrated victories at the Istanbul and New Delhi Half Marathons.
In the women’s race, Chebet of Eastern maintained her excellent form by securing the women’s title in 34:44.85. Gladys Kwamboka of Main Campus finished second in 34:47.11, while Margaret Chelimo of Eastern claimed the third spot in 34:47.59.
