Kenya’s U17 national team, the Rising Starlets, are on the verge of making history by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
In a decisive match at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, they triumphed over Ethiopia with a commanding 3-0 victory, propelling them into the final qualification round against Burundi.
The match was a showcase of skill and determination, with team captain Elizabeth Ochaka opening the scoring with a powerful header. Her goal was complemented by two stunning strikes from Velma Awuor and the young talent Lorna Faith, sealing the win and bringing the team one step closer to the global stage.
Despite a tense start and a goalless first leg in Addis Ababa, the Starlets displayed their prowess at home. The midfield worked tirelessly to create opportunities for forward Valerie Nekesa, whose efforts narrowly missed the mark.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Ochaka’s header sent the fans into a frenzy. The second half saw the Starlets intensify their attack, with Awuor’s long-range shot finding the back of the net, followed by Faith’s remarkable goal, a testament to her MVP status.
The Starlets’ victory was not just a win but a statement of intent. As they prepare to face Burundi, they stand on the cusp of a historic achievement for Kenyan football, inching ever closer to the dream of competing in the FIFA World Cup.
