Kenya’s under-20 football team captain, Amos Wanjala, has earned his first call-up to the Harambee Stars as they prepare for two decisive AFCON 2025 qualifier matches against Zimbabwe and Namibia next week.
Wanjala, who impressed at last month’s Cecafa U20 tournament in Tanzania by leading the Rising Stars to qualify for the junior AFCON in South Africa, now joins the senior national team for a critical stage of the competition.
The 23-man squad is set to depart Nairobi on November 11 for South Africa, where they will face Zimbabwe on November 15 at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. They will then wrap up the qualification campaign against Namibia at the same venue on November 19. Currently, Kenya holds third place in Group J with four points, trailing second-placed Zimbabwe by four points.
To secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, Kenya needs victories in both upcoming matches. Their qualification hopes were severely tested last month following back-to-back defeats to Cameroon, who emerged victorious with a 4-1 win in the first leg in Yaounde and a 1-0 win in Kampala.
