Kenya’s star opposite attacker Sharon Chepchumba has signed a six-month contract with Turkish Division One side Edremit Bld. Altinoluk Volleyball Club for the 2024/2025 season.
The 26-year-old, widely regarded as one of Malkia Strikers’ finest players, has already linked up with her new team after a brief but impressive stint in Vietnam’s top-tier league with Hoa Chat Duc Giang Lao Cai.
Chepchumba’s move to Turkey is seen as a critical step in her comeback journey following a challenging year marked by a knee injury that sidelined her for months. The injury, sustained late last year while playing for Greece’s PAOK, temporarily halted the career of one of Kenya’s most lethal attackers.
Despite the setback, Chepchumba demonstrated her resilience and skill during her debut with Hoa Chat Duc Giang Lao Cai, delivering an astonishing 32 points to lead her team to a 3-2 victory. This performance reaffirmed her position as a top-tier volleyball talent.
A product of Kwanthanze Secondary School’s renowned volleyball program, Chepchumba had rejoined KCB earlier this year, hoping to stage a quick return to competitive play. However, complications from her injury forced her to miss the 2024 Olympic Games, leaving many fans and analysts speculating on how her presence might have altered Kenya’s campaign, particularly in their hard-fought match against Japan.
Now fully fit, Chepchumba is poised to make a significant impact at Edremit Bld. Altinoluk, where she will be tasked with helping the team secure promotion to Turkey’s top-tier league next season. Her arrival adds firepower to the squad, which is looking to capitalize on her attacking prowess and experience at the international level.
Chepchumba joins an elite group of Kenyan volleyball players excelling on the global stage, including Veronica Adhiambo of GS Panionios, Pamela Adhiambo of LP Viesti, and KCB’s Juliana Namutira. As she embarks on this new chapter, all eyes will be on “Chumba” to see if she can help her team achieve their ambitious goals while solidifying her reputation as one of Africa’s premier volleyball talents.
