Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku had his one-match suspension, received for picking up two yellow cards, one of which was for his goal celebration in front of Juventus fans, overturned by Italian football officials on Saturday.
Lukaku had held his finger to his mouth and told Juve supporters to “shut up” after a stoppage-time penalty secured Inter a 1-1 Italian Cup draw in Turin two weeks ago.
After the decision was reversed, Lukaku can now play in the second leg of the semi-final in Milan on Wednesday. Gabriele Gravina, the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), cited Lukaku’s repeated experiences of serious racial hatred and discrimination as a justifiable reason for his behavior.
Lukaku thanked the FIGC president in a statement and stated that the decision would send a positive message regarding the fight against racism.
