KCB RFC has received a significant boost as they prepare for the National Sevens circuit, with the return of Shujaa international Vincent Onyala to training after a six-month injury layoff.
Onyala, who has been sidelined since October last year due to a knee injury, resumed training with the Sevens squad last month and is now in contention to play in the upcoming Eldoret Sevens tournament in July.
KCB Sevens coach Andrew Amonde expressed his excitement about Onyala’s comeback, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on their pursuit to reclaim the title from Menengai Oilers.
“We are thrilled to have him back in the squad. He has been training with us for the past month and looks to be in good shape,” Amonde stated. The experienced KCB stalwart, who has transitioned from being the National Sevens skipper to a coach, acknowledged that this will be the first tournament for Onyala since his return. Amonde also expressed his eagerness to embrace the challenge of coaching the team during the six-leg circuit.
“I’m delighted and looking forward to the experience of coaching our young side. I’ve been accustomed to playing, but this is a different ball game—giving instructions from the sidelines,” Amonde added.
Amonde expects this year’s circuit to be different from the previous one, as Kenya Sevens players will be representing their respective club sides.
“Last year, we had commitments with the Simbas, but this year, we’re fortunate to have the national team players training with us. So, we anticipate a highly competitive circuit,” Amonde explained.
He identified Menengai Oilers, Mwamba, Strathmore, and Quins as the top contenders for the sevens crown, alongside KCB. “These four teams are going to be strong as we battle for the title.”
In the previous season, KCB finished second overall with 107 points, claiming victory in the Kabeberi Sevens, finishing as runners-up in the Christie Sevens, and reaching the semifinals in the Dala, Prinsloo, and Kakamega Sevens tournaments.
