The eagerly awaited 8th edition of the 2023 Devolution Conference games will grace the magnificent Kipchoge Keino stadium, currently under construction, from August 15th to 19th in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
In a recent inspection visit on Tuesday evening, Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba assessed the construction progress and emphasized the importance of meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality workmanship for the successful hosting of the Devolution Conference games.
Namwamba made it clear that the government expects timely completion and excellent standards. Recognizing the significance of the facility in nurturing talent in the North Rift Valley, he stressed the need for the Kipchoge Keino and Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet to be equipped with top-notch infrastructure that meets international standards, befitting the region’s renowned athletes.
“This region is the epitome of athletics, as it has produced numerous stars. It is only logical for the government to provide a platform that motivates young runners to pursue their dreams,” said Namwamba.
Furthermore, Namwamba expressed support for Kenya’s bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), highlighting the Kipchoge Keino stadium as one of the proposed venues for the prestigious tournament.
“We are optimistic that our bid will be successful. This facility is among those selected to host the games, so we want the project to be executed with the utmost care,” Namwamba added.
Sports Permanent Secretary (PS) Peter Tum assured that the government is committed to ensuring the stadium meets the required standards, as a tribute to track legend Kipchoge Keino.
Tum emphasized that the construction progress is being closely monitored, and the government is fully prepared to facilitate the contractors to ensure adherence to the agreed project plan.
The 2023 Devolution Conference games will feature a wide range of sports, including marathons, showcasing the exceptional athletic prowess of Uasin Gishu County and promoting local talent from grassroots levels.
