Veteran forward Marta has been chosen to lead a fresh-faced Brazil team as they aim to make history by winning their first-ever women’s World Cup, announced coach Pia Sundhage on Tuesday.
At the age of 37, Marta, widely regarded as the greatest female footballer of all time, will participate in her sixth World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Her remarkable return comes after recovering from a knee injury that kept her sidelined for nearly a year.
Sundhage expressed her admiration for Marta, referring to her as the “Queen” and an icon. However, the coach remained uncertain about Marta’s inclusion in the starting lineup, emphasizing her exceptional abilities in the final pass.
As Copa America champions, Brazil finds itself at a crucial juncture, with a squad of predominantly young players not considered favourites for the tournament title.
Sundhage has named 11 players who will make their World Cup debut, alongside experienced campaigners such as goalkeepers Leticia and Barbara, defenders Kathellen, Rafaelle, and Tamires, as well as forwards Bia Zaneratto, Andressa Alves, and Debinha.
Brazil, placed in Group F alongside France, Jamaica, and Panama, will commence their World Cup campaign against Panama in Adelaide on July 24.
