In an exhilarating match, Daniil Medvedev battled his way to victory over Christopher Eubanks, securing a spot in his first Wimbledon semi-final.
The world number three from Russia displayed his resilience, triumphing in a five-set thriller with a final score of 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-1.
Despite Eubanks’ impressive 74 winners compared to Medvedev’s 52, the Russian’s astonishingly low 13 unforced errors proved to be a crucial factor in his success.
Eubanks, who had previously stunned fifth-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas, aimed to become only the third man in history to reach the semi-finals on his debut. However, his challenge waned in the final set of the intense match.
Reflecting on his performance, Medvedev expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. He credited his ability to bounce back after losing the third set and praised his opponent’s strong play. Medvedev’s exceptional serving skills were on full display, firing 28 aces throughout the match.
The opening set saw Medvedev dominate, securing the sole break in the third game and committing just one unforced error, compared to Eubanks’ 11. However, Eubanks found his rhythm in the second set, showcasing his powerful one-handed backhand and ultimately levelling the match with a double break and his seventh ace.
Eubanks continued his impressive form in the third set, breaking Medvedev in the opening game and taking a two-sets-to-one lead.
Medvedev’s frustration became apparent when he received a code violation for accidentally hitting a ball into a courtside camera operator in the eighth game. Eubanks capitalized on the momentum, claiming the set with an unreturned serve.
The fourth set was dominated by strong serving from both players, with Eubanks surpassing 100 aces for the tournament. However, it was Medvedev’s composure that prevailed in the tiebreaker, as Eubanks committed a backhand volley error.
In the deciding set, Eubanks struggled to maintain his attacking game style, allowing Medvedev to secure crucial double breaks and ultimately take the set 6-1. With this victory, Medvedev advances to the semi-finals, where he will face either top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz or sixth-seed Holger Rune in his quest for a spot in the final.
