The national boxing team has arrived safely in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in preparation for the highly anticipated African Men and Women’s championships.
The championship is scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 6, showcasing the talents of boxers from across the continent.
The draw for the competition will be held, determining the opponents for the 15 Kenyan boxers – 10 male and 5 female – who are part of the prestigious annual continental showpiece. The team is under the guidance of coach Benjamin Musa, with assistance from David Munuhe. Boniface Mugunde serves as the team’s captain, supported by Elizabeth Andiego.
In the lead-up to the championships, the Kenyan boxers have undergone rigorous training at both the Mathare Depot and the VMX Fitness Centre at the Village Market in Nairobi. Their dedication and hard work have prepared them for the challenges they will face on the international stage.
Excitingly, the prize money for the championship stands at $1 million, making it a lucrative event for the participants. To ensure fair distribution, the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) has decided to allocate $1,250 to each of the four losing quarter-finalists.
As a result, the prize money for the gold medallists has been adjusted from $20,000 to $15,000. However, the prize money for the silver and bronze medal winners remains unchanged at $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.
With these prize amounts, the gold medallists stand to win an impressive sum of Sh2.1 million, while the silver and bronze place finishers will receive Sh1.4 million and Sh700,000, respectively.
The African Men and Women’s championships promise to be a thrilling spectacle, with the Kenyan team eager to showcase their skills and bring glory to their nation. As the competition unfolds, sports enthusiasts from all over the continent will be eagerly watching the bouts and cheering on their favourite boxers.
The championship not only provides a platform for the boxers to demonstrate their prowess but also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship among nations. It serves as an opportunity to celebrate the rich boxing talent present in Africa and strengthens the ties between participating countries.
As the draw for the competition takes place, the Kenyan boxers will be eagerly anticipating their opponents, ready to give their all and compete for the prestigious titles.
