Formula One team Mercedes revealed on Thursday that Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have signed contract extensions, securing their partnership until 2025. The announcement comes ahead of the Italian Grand Prix scheduled for this weekend.
Hamilton, currently occupying the fourth spot in the drivers’ standings and trailing leader Max Verstappen by 183 points, will continue his journey with Mercedes beyond his 40th birthday. Russell, another British driver, holds the 7th position with 99 points.
Expressing his dedication, Hamilton stated, “We have never been hungrier to win. We have learnt from every success but also every setback… we continue to fight no matter the challenge and we will win again.”
Acknowledging the team’s support, he added, “I’m grateful to the team who have supported me both on and off the track. Our story isn’t finished, we are determined to achieve more together and we won’t stop until we do.”
Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, clinched six of his titles between 2014 and 2020 with Mercedes. The 38-year-old’s renewed contract, which was due to expire after the current season, is believed to bring him around £50 million ($63.4 million) per season.
The decision by Mercedes comes as they face strong competition from Red Bull, who have dominated this season by winning every Grand Prix so far.
